What Schema Markup Is
Schema markup is structured data that describes a page in a vocabulary search engines agree on. The vocabulary lives at schema.org. The format Google recommends is JSON-LD: a block of JSON inside a <script type="application/ld+json"> tag that sits in the page and does not change how the page looks.
A person reading your contact page knows the address, the hours and the phone number. A crawler has to guess which line is which. JSON-LD removes the guess. It says, in fields with fixed names, this is a RoofingContractor, this is its address, these are its hours. Google uses that to qualify pages for rich results, and search and AI systems use it to understand which entity a page is about.
The Five Types This Generator Builds
- Organization: the company itself. Name, logo, URL, contact details and the profiles that belong to it (
sameAs). It usually goes on the home page or the about page. - LocalBusiness: a business with a physical location or service area customers deal with. Use the most specific subtype that fits, such as Plumber, Dentist or RoofingContractor. It carries the address, coordinates, opening hours and price range.
- Service: one service you sell, who provides it, where, and optionally a starting price. It goes on the service page.
- FAQPage: a page whose main content is a list of questions with one answer each.
- BreadcrumbList: the trail from the home page to the current page.
How The Validation Works
Every check runs in your browser against the fields you fill in. Nothing is sent anywhere. The tool checks three kinds of thing.
Required And Recommended Properties
The checks follow Google's structured data documentation for each type. For LocalBusiness, Google requires name and address, and recommends url, telephone, geo, openingHoursSpecification and priceRange, among others. For Organization, Google lists no required properties, so everything is flagged as recommended. For BreadcrumbList, every item needs a name and a position, and every item except the last needs a URL. For FAQPage, every Question needs an acceptedAnswer with text.
Formats
- Absolute URLs. Every URL must start with
https://. A relative path like/services/is ambiguous once the markup is read outside the page. - ISO formats. Times are ISO 8601 (
08:00), dates areYYYY-MM-DD, countries are two letter ISO 3166-1 codes (CA), currencies are three letter ISO 4217 codes (CAD). - Coordinates. Google asks for at least five decimal places on latitude and longitude. Three decimals can place a pin a city block away.
- Phone numbers should carry the country code.
What It Cannot Check
The tool cannot see your page, so it cannot confirm that the markup matches the visible content, that the logo meets Google's minimum size of 112 by 112 pixels, or that the URLs resolve. That is what the two official testers are for.
How To Read The Result
A red badge is a fault that makes the markup invalid or ineligible. Fix those first. An amber badge is a recommended property that is missing or weak. A blue badge is context, such as the fact that Google shows FAQ rich results only for well known, authoritative government and health sites since August 2023, or that Service has no rich result of its own. Neither of those makes the markup pointless. Both describe the page in terms machines read.
Testing And Shipping It
- Copy the snippet and paste it into Google's Rich Results Test. It shows which rich results the markup qualifies for and any errors Google sees.
- Paste it into the Schema Markup Validator at validator.schema.org. It checks the markup against the full schema.org vocabulary, including types like Service that Google does not use for rich results.
- Add it to the page it describes, in the head or the body. On WordPress, use your SEO plugin's custom schema field or a header code block on that page only.
- After it is live, run the live URL through the Rich Results Test again and watch the Enhancements reports in Search Console.
Mistakes To Avoid
- Marking up content that is not on the page. FAQ answers, reviews and prices in the markup must be visible to visitors. Hidden markup breaks Google's structured data policies.
- One LocalBusiness block on every page. Put the full business markup on the home or contact page. Service pages get Service markup that points at the business as provider.
- Self made review stars. Reviews you publish about your own business are not eligible for review rich results.
- Stale hours. Update the markup when your hours change, the same day you update Google Business Profile.
- Different names in different places. The name in the markup, on the site and on your Google Business Profile should match.
The Agency Angle
Schema is one of the few SEO tasks that is fully specified, quick to deliver and easy to verify, which makes it a clean line item. Wise Media uses this logic on client builds: Organization or LocalBusiness on the home page, Service on every service page, BreadcrumbList site wide, and a validation pass in both testers before launch.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
JSON-LD is a way of writing schema.org structured data as a block of JSON inside a script tag. It describes the page to search engines without changing what visitors see. Google recommends JSON-LD over microdata and RDFa because it is easier to add and maintain.
In the head or the body of the page it describes. Google reads JSON-LD in either place. On WordPress, use your SEO plugin's schema or custom code field for that page, or a code block in the page header. Do not paste the same block on every page.
Use LocalBusiness, with the most specific subtype, if customers visit you or you serve a defined local area. Use Organization for companies without a local presence, or alongside LocalBusiness on the home page to describe the parent company.
Only for well known, authoritative government and health websites, since Google changed it in August 2023. FAQPage markup is still valid and still describes the page to search and AI systems, so it is worth keeping on genuine FAQ pages.
Google has no Service rich result, so the Rich Results Test will show no eligible items for it. Service is valid schema.org vocabulary, and validator.schema.org will check it. It helps describe what you sell, where and by whom.
Paste the code or the live URL into Google's Rich Results Test to see rich result eligibility and errors. Then use the Schema Markup Validator at validator.schema.org to check it against the full vocabulary. Fix red errors first, then the warnings.
Google says structured data is not a general ranking factor. It makes pages eligible for rich results, which can change how a listing looks and how often it is clicked, and it helps machines understand which business and services a page is about.
Google asks for at least five decimal places in LocalBusiness geo coordinates. Five decimals locate a point to roughly a metre. Copy them from Google Maps by right clicking the building and selecting the coordinates.
