Ads clients rarely leave because of the ads alone. They leave when leads go cold, results cannot be proven or nobody agreed what success meant. Score one client on ten protections and get the three fixes that cut the risk most.

Optional. Score one ads client at a time; it appears on the report.

Why Ads Clients Churn

When an ads client cancels, the reason they give is usually the ads: not enough leads, leads too expensive, results down. Look closer and the cause is often somewhere else. The leads arrived and nobody called them for two days. Sales happened, but nobody could connect them to a campaign. The client expected booked jobs and the agency reported clicks. The budget was cut every other month, so nothing ever finished learning.

None of that is fixed by better targeting. It is fixed by the systems around the ads. This scorecard rates one client on the ten protections that decide whether good campaigns turn into a client who stays.

How The Risk Score Is Calculated

Each question awards protection points for the answer you pick. The maximums add up to 100. Your churn risk is 100 minus the protection points earned, so a client with every protection in place scores 0 and a client with none scores 100. The weights are our design, from what drives renewals on Wise Media ads work, and they are listed here in full:

Lead Handling, 34 Points

  • Lead response speed, 14 points. The heaviest single weight. A lead that waits a day is often a lead lost.
  • Who answers leads, 10 points. A named person with a script beats whoever happens to be free.
  • CRM and lead tracking, 10 points. Every lead with a status and an outcome.

Measurement, 32 Points

  • Attribution and offline conversions, 12 points. Won sales matched back to campaigns, ideally imported into the ad platforms.
  • Agreed success metric, 12 points. One metric with a target, in writing.
  • Reporting cadence, 8 points. A monthly review call plus a report earns full points.

Ownership, 16 Points

  • Owned landing pages, 8 points. Pages you can edit and test.
  • Ad accounts and pixels in the client name, 8 points. The client owns the assets; you have partner access.

Commercial Fit, 18 Points

  • Budget stability, 9 points. A committed monthly budget.
  • Offer strength, 9 points. A clear, priced offer that stands up next to competitors.

The score appears once eight of the ten questions are answered. Unanswered questions are left out of the calculation, not counted as risk.

How To Read The Result

  • 0 to 39, Low Churn Risk. The client relationship rests on systems, not on a good month. Keep the review rhythm going.
  • 40 to 69, Elevated Churn Risk. One weak month could end it. Fix the top three gaps this quarter.
  • 70 to 100, High Churn Risk. The client is judging you without proof. Start the fixes this week and say so on your next call.

The section bars show risk by area. The three fixes are the gaps that remove the most risk points, each with the specific change to make.

What To Do With The Fixes

Most fixes sit partly on the client side: answering leads, tracking outcomes, keeping the budget steady. Do not treat that as outside your job. Raise it on the next review call as part of getting results, offer to set up the pieces you can (instant lead replies, a simple pipeline, offline conversion imports) and write the rest into an onboarding checklist for every new ads client.

Why Ownership Lowers Risk

It can seem that holding the ad accounts in your own name keeps the client tied to you. In practice it creates suspicion and turns every renewal into a negotiation over access. A client who owns their accounts and pixels and still chooses you each month is a far steadier client. Landing pages work the other way: you want control of them, because you cannot improve a conversion rate on a page you cannot edit.

Mistakes To Avoid

  • Scoring the campaigns instead of the client. Strong campaigns do not protect a client whose leads go unanswered.
  • Answering from hope. If you do not know how fast leads are answered, assume the worst until you check.
  • Reporting clicks to a client who wants jobs. Report the agreed metric first.
  • Waiting for the cancellation email. Score every ads client each quarter and act on the elevated ones first.

The Agency Angle

Keeping a client is cheaper than replacing one, and ads agencies lose clients for reasons they could have seen months ahead. Use this score at onboarding to set expectations and quarterly to catch drift. Wise Media runs the same checks on its own ads clients before each monthly review.

Quick Answer

Why Do Paid Ads Clients Churn?

Ads clients usually churn because the systems around the ads fail, not the ads themselves: slow lead follow up, no tracking of which leads became sales, no agreed success metric, irregular reporting, unstable budgets or a weak offer. Fixing lead handling, attribution and reporting lowers churn risk more than tweaking campaigns.

  • Protections. Ten, weighted to 100 points
  • Risk. 100 minus protection points earned
  • Output. Verdict plus the three biggest fixes

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Agree one success metric in writing, hold a monthly review, make sure leads are answered fast by a named person, track which leads become sales and import them as offline conversions. Most churn comes from those gaps, not from campaign settings.

It sends sales or qualified leads that happen outside the website, such as phone sales or signed quotes, back to Google Ads or Meta. The platforms then optimise for real customers, and the client can see revenue tied to the ads.

In the client name, with the agency given partner or manager access. The client keeps their data and history if anything changes, and the relationship rests on results rather than on who holds the logins.

Because the client judges the ads by the sales that follow. If leads wait hours or days, fewer convert, the cost per sale looks high and the ads get blamed. Fast follow up makes the same campaigns look far better.

Ten questions award protection points with maximums that add up to 100. Lead speed carries 14, attribution and the success metric 12 each, lead owner and CRM 10 each, budget and offer 9 each, and reporting, landing pages and ownership 8 each. Risk is 100 minus the points earned.

At least monthly, with a short call as well as a written report. The call is where you explain the numbers against the agreed metric and agree next tests. A report sent with no conversation is easy to ignore.

Yes. Ads put an offer in front of people; they do not make it attractive. A clear, well priced offer converts better at the same cost, which makes the agency look better without any change to targeting.

No. The score runs in your browser. If you export the full report we ask for your email and store it with your answers, so we can send material from the Paid Ads Agency Course.
