Tracking Verification Checker

See exactly which analytics tags, ad pixels and consent tools a page ships, with their IDs and any duplicates. Then get the exact steps to confirm they actually fire, because installed and firing are not the same thing.

Reads the page source for analytics, ad pixels, consent tools and server side tagging hints. Tip: check the page your ads send people to, and the thank you page after a lead form.

What A Tracking Check Tells You

Ad accounts are only as good as the signals they receive. If the Meta Pixel is missing, Meta optimises blind. If it is installed twice, every lead is counted twice and the cost per lead looks half of what it is. If Universal Analytics code is still on the page, someone is looking at a property that stopped collecting data in July 2024. This tool reads a page's source and lists the tags it ships, so you can see the tracking setup before you change a budget.

What It Detects

Our server fetches the page as delivered, and your browser reads every script, its source address and the noscript fallbacks. It looks for the patterns each platform's install code uses:

  • Google Tag Manager: container IDs starting GTM-.
  • Google Analytics 4: measurement IDs starting G-, from gtag.js and config commands.
  • Google Ads: conversion IDs starting AW-.
  • Universal Analytics: old UA- IDs, flagged because the product is retired.
  • Meta Pixel: the ID in fbq('init', ...) and the noscript image.
  • TikTok Pixel: the ID in ttq.load(...).
  • LinkedIn Insight Tag: the partner ID.
  • Microsoft Advertising UET, Pinterest and Snap: their tag IDs and libraries.
  • Hotjar and Microsoft Clarity: site and project IDs.
  • Consent: Google Consent Mode consent default commands, the v2 parameters ad_user_data and ad_personalization, and consent platforms including CookieYes, Cookiebot and OneTrust.
  • Server side hints: Google tags loaded from a domain other than googletagmanager.com, or a server_container_url setting.

Duplicates

A duplicate is the same thing set up twice: a GTM container loaded by two scripts, a GA4 ID configured twice, a Meta pixel initialised twice, or PageView tracked more times than there are pixels. The usual cause is a theme setting or plugin adding a tag that GTM already fires. Two different Meta pixel IDs are listed separately, because that can be deliberate.

How To Read The Result

The table lists every tag found with its ID and a status. Installed means the code is in the source once. Duplicate means it is there more than once. Retired means the product no longer collects data. Check each ID against the accounts you actually own: an old agency's pixel, or a pixel from a different business entirely, is a common find. The findings below the table are sorted with problems first, then notes about GTM, consent and server side tagging.

What It Cannot See

Three limits matter, and the result states them:

  1. Tags inside Google Tag Manager. GTM loads its tags after the page arrives. The container's contents are not in the page source, so a site that runs everything through GTM shows only the GTM ID. Open GTM Preview mode to see what it fires.
  2. Whether a tag fires. Installed code can be blocked by consent settings, broken by a script error or set to the wrong trigger. Only a live test proves it fires.
  3. Server events. The Meta Conversions API and server side GTM send data from a server, not the page.

How To Confirm Tags Fire

  • Google: connect the page in Tag Assistant and complete a conversion. Watch GA4 DebugView, and check the Google Ads conversion action reports Recording.
  • Meta: load the page with the Meta Pixel Helper extension, then use Test events in Events Manager while you submit a real lead.
  • TikTok: TikTok Pixel Helper, then Test events in TikTok Events Manager.
  • LinkedIn and Microsoft: the Insight Tag status in Campaign Manager and the UET Tag Helper.
  • Consent: decline cookies in a private window and confirm in Tag Assistant that tags respect the choice.

Mistakes To Avoid

  • Checking only the homepage. Check the landing page your ads use and the thank you page after a form.
  • Hard coding a pixel and adding it in GTM as well.
  • Setting the consent default after the tags load. It must run first.
  • Assuming a conversion is tracked because the pixel is installed. Submit a test lead every time you change the site.

For Agencies

Most ad accounts Wise Media audits have at least one tracking problem, and it is the first thing worth fixing, because every optimisation decision depends on it. Run this before taking over an account, and again after any website change. A duplicate pixel or a retired UA tag is a specific, credible opener with a prospect.

Quick Answer

How Do I Check Which Tracking Pixels Are On A Website?

Scan the page source for each platform's install code: GTM- container IDs, G- GA4 IDs, AW- Google Ads IDs, the Meta fbq init ID, TikTok ttq.load and LinkedIn partner IDs. That shows what is installed. To confirm tags fire, use Tag Assistant, Meta Pixel Helper and each platform's test events view.

  • Detects. Google, Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Pinterest, Snap
  • Also checks. Duplicates, consent mode and server side hints
  • Cannot see. Tags inside GTM, or whether tags fire

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Install the Meta Pixel Helper Chrome extension and load the page; it shows each pixel ID and event. Then use Test events in Meta Events Manager, enter your URL and submit a real lead. If the event arrives, the pixel fires.

GTM loads its tags with JavaScript after the page arrives. The container contents are stored by Google, not in your page source. Use GTM Preview mode or Tag Assistant to see exactly which tags fire and when.

Page views and conversions are counted twice. Reports overstate results, cost per lead looks lower than it is, and ad platforms optimise on inflated signals. Remove one install, usually the hard coded copy or the plugin.

No. Google stopped processing Universal Analytics data on 1 July 2024. A UA- tag still on a page collects nothing useful. Remove it and make sure GA4 is installed and recording.

It is how Google tags receive a visitor's consent choice. Version 2 added ad_user_data and ad_personalization. Google requires it for ads personalisation and remarketing with traffic from the EEA and UK. The default must be set before tags load.

No. The Conversions API sends events from a server, so nothing appears in the page source. Check Events Manager, where each event shows whether it arrived from the browser, the server or both.

The landing page your ads send people to, and the thank you page after a form or checkout. Conversion tags often live only on the thank you page, so checking the homepage alone can miss them.

The tags may be added by a plugin with JavaScript after load, loaded only after cookie consent, or the site may have blocked our checker. Check the page in a browser with Tag Assistant or the platform helper extensions.
