What A Website Scope Document Is For
A scope of work is the written list of what a website project includes, what it does not, how long it takes and how it is paid for. It is the document both sides go back to when a client asks for "one more page" in week six, or when a launch slips because the copy never arrived. Without it, every disagreement becomes a matter of memory, and the agency usually loses.
Most scope creep is not a client trying to get something for free. It is two people who never wrote down the same picture of the project. A good scope document makes that picture specific enough that both sides can point at it.
How This Generator Builds The Document
The tool takes your inputs and writes ten numbered sections, in the order a client reads them:
- Overview. Who it is for, who delivers it, the tier, and the rule that anything not written down is a change request.
- Deliverables. The phases every website project has: discovery, design, development, testing, launch and a bug fix window you set.
- Pages. Your page and template list, numbered, so "up to 4 service pages" is a countable promise.
- Features. Each ticked feature with a specific description. Ecommerce, for example, names one payment gateway and product loading up to an agreed count.
- Timeline. Your total weeks split into phases: roughly 10 percent discovery, 30 percent design, 15 percent content, testing and launch, and the rest development, each at least one week.
- Revisions. The number of rounds at design and at build, and a definition of a round: one consolidated list from one decision maker.
- Client Responsibilities. Your list, plus an item for each feature you ticked, such as API keys for integrations or product data for a store.
- Not Included. Every feature you left unticked, plus a default list of the exclusions that cause the most disputes.
- Investment And Payment. Your price split by your deposit share into two or three payments, each tied to a project event rather than a date.
- Acceptance. How each phase is approved, what happens when feedback does not arrive, and signature lines.
The tier buttons load an example page list, feature set, timeline and revision count. They are starting points, not recommendations for what a tier should contain. Edit them to match what you actually sell.
Why The Not Included List Matters Most
Clients read the deliverables. Disputes are settled by the exclusions. The default list covers the items that most often turn into unpaid work: hosting and maintenance after launch, third party costs, photography, logo work, extra pages, extra revision rounds, content migration, legal text, ongoing SEO and ads, email setup, accessibility certification and fixes for problems someone else caused after launch.
Unticked features are added to the list automatically. If the scope says nothing about a blog, a client can argue it was implied. If it says "Blog or news section" under Not Included, there is nothing to argue about.
How To Use The Result
- Send it with the proposal, not after. The client should see the exclusions before they see the invoice.
- Attach it to your contract. The scope describes the work. Your contract or terms of service cover liability, ownership, termination and payment terms. This tool does not replace a contract, and you should have yours reviewed by a lawyer where you work.
- Print to PDF for signing. The print button lays out only the document, without the rest of this page. Download the Markdown or HTML version if you want to edit it in your own template.
- Use the share link to send a draft to a partner or project manager before it goes to the client.
Mistakes To Avoid
- Unlimited revisions. They feel generous and are the single biggest cause of projects that never finish. Two rounds per phase is enough when each round is consolidated.
- Dates instead of events. Tie payments to signing, design approval and launch, not calendar dates, so a client delay does not leave you working unpaid.
- No feedback deadline. Without one, a project can sit in review for months. A five business day window with deemed approval keeps it moving.
- Vague counts. "Service pages" invites twelve. "Service detail pages (up to 4)" does not.
- Silent third party costs. Plugins, booking tools and fonts cost money every year. Say who pays.
The Agency Angle
Agencies that scope tightly can price confidently, because the price covers a known amount of work. Wise Media writes a scope like this for every build, and the change request clause is what makes "yes, we can add that" a sales conversation instead of a favour.

Quick Answer
What Should A Website Scope Of Work Include?
A website scope of work should include an overview, the deliverables, a numbered page list, the features, a phased timeline, the number of revision rounds, client responsibilities, a clear list of what is not included, the price and payment schedule, and how work is accepted. The exclusions list is what prevents scope creep.
- Sections. Ten, from Overview to Acceptance
- Protection. Unticked features become exclusions automatically
- Output. Print to PDF, Markdown or HTML
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
List the pages and features in countable terms, split the timeline into phases, set a number of revision rounds, name what the client must supply and by when, list everything not included, and tie each payment to a project event. This generator writes all of it from your inputs.
A proposal sells the project: the problem, the approach and the price. A scope of work defines it: exactly what is delivered, what is excluded, the timeline and the terms. Send the scope with the proposal so the client agrees to both at once.
Two consolidated rounds per phase is a common and workable default. What matters more than the number is defining a round as one combined list of changes from one decision maker, so scattered feedback does not become endless revisions.
Write a specific Not Included list, count pages and features, define a revision round, and state that anything not written down is a change request quoted in writing before work starts. Then follow that process every time, even for small requests.
That is your business decision. Many studios take between a third and a half up front so the deposit covers early work if the project stops. Whatever you choose, tie the remaining payments to events like design approval and launch rather than dates.
Not on its own. A scope describes the work. Liability, ownership of the work, termination and dispute terms belong in a contract or terms of service. Attach the scope to that contract and have the contract reviewed by a lawyer in your jurisdiction.

No. The document is built in your browser. If you download the Markdown or HTML file, we ask for your email and save it with the tier, page count, features, weeks and price, not the client name.
